Police Vulnerable Sector Check

How to request and prepare an Ontario vulnerable sector check when your program or placement assigns this requirement.

Applicability: A program, placement, or employer may request this check for a role involving trust or authority over children or other vulnerable people.

CareCard catalogue default: 365 days.

Evidence reviewed: August 31, 2026

In Ontario, a vulnerable sector check must be completed by your local police service. Confirm the required check type and application instructions with the requesting organization before applying.

What your assigned requirement may ask for

  • The complete vulnerable sector check result
  • Your identifying details and the issue or completion date
  • Every page supplied by the police service
  • Any separate consent, disclosure, or program form named in the requirement

The police service may ask for a letter or information from the requesting organization. That application support is not necessarily the final result you must upload.

Current guidance

Ontario law establishes three types of police record check. The individual must consent before a check is conducted. A vulnerable sector check contains the information authorized for that check type and is restricted to eligible roles involving a position of trust or authority over children or other vulnerable people.

Local police services issue vulnerable sector checks. The requesting employer, agency, or organization decides how often it requests a new check and whether it will accept a previous result.

CareCard validity

CareCard's current catalogue default is 365 days. Ontario does not give every vulnerable sector check a universal one-year expiry. The age and reuse rules shown on your assigned requirement control.
